SAMPLE 3 NIGHT ITINERARY
(with accommodation at Kololo Game Reserve)
Day 1: Arrival and check-in at Kololo Game Reserve in the Waterberg Mountains of South Africa, followed by lunch at the beautiful restaurant looking out over the plains. In the late afternoon, set out on a game drive on Kololo, exploring the 2 500 hectares of this bushveld wilderness with a chance of seeing zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, eland, kudu, blesbok, warthog, impala, jackal and other species of African wildlife. Enjoy sundowners on the riverbank before returning to the main lodge for a delicious 3-course dinner at the restaurant or around the campfire in the boma.
Day 2: Enjoy tea/coffee in your chalet, followed by breakfast on the deck at the restaurant watching the early morning light wash over the savannah. A short road transfer of 15 minutes to Savannah where you will be introduced to the horses, mount up and set out on your first morning horse safari of 2 to 3 hours. The ride follows streambeds and game paths through the bush and we may surprise reedbuck, warthog or kudu in these areas. We cross through open grass plains with good opportunities for long trots or canters and finally end up at a spectacular viewpoint on the southern escarpment of the Waterberg. We dismount for a short while to enjoy the view over miles and miles of African bush and with luck may spot Verreauxs’ eagle or Cape vulture riding the thermals along the cliffs or troops of baboon sunning themselves amongst the rocks. Return to Kololo for lunch and a short siesta, followed by a game drive on Welgevonden Private Game Reserve. This reserve of over 36 000 hectares is home to the famed ‘big five’ of Africa and there is a good chance of seeing lion, elephant and white rhino, as well as a multitude of other species. After sundowners and snacks at a viewpoint, the game drive continues after dark, where with the help of a spotlight, you may encounter some of the fascinating nocturnal animals such as brown hyaena, porcupine, aardvark or even leopard, African wild cat or genet. Return to Kololo for dinner.
Day 3: Our horse safari this morning takes us to a neighbouring private game reserve with the opportunity of seeing herds of impala, zebra, wildebeest, red hartebeest or eland in the wide valleys or spotting waterbuck and giraffe in the forested areas. Sandy tracks through the plains are good for an exhilarating canter and we enjoy a short break at a river pool halfway through the ride. Return to Kololo for lunch and change the pace in the afternoon with either a guided bush walk or a guided mountain bike trail on Kololo. This gives you the opportunity of learning about the smaller inhabitants of the bush as well as the diverse flora of the region. Sundowners and dinner on the deck at Kololo.
Day 4: After breakfast, we request that you check out of your room before the morning activities. You have a choice this morning of another horse safari or a game drive on Welgevonden or a guided bush walk on Kololo. Departure before lunch.
